Basic Driver Improvement School

There are two situations in which you may need to attend basic driver improvement school – as mandated by court due to a serious moving violation or elected by choice in response to a non-criminal moving violation. If you have been convicted of the following offenses, the court will require you to attend a basic driver improvement course:

You have 90 days from the citation date to complete the required school or your driving privileges will be canceled until you complete the school requirement.

On the other hand, if you are charged with a non-criminal moving violation and do not have a commercial driver license, you may elect to attend a basic driver improvement school once every 12 months or for a total of 5 times within your lifetime. Attending traffic school will minimize the penalties you might incur for non-criminal violations, such as avoiding points on your driving record.

Note that in most counties you must voluntarily elect to attend basic driver improvement school within 30 days of receiving the traffic citation. Within the 30-day window, you must pay the fine and fees for the traffic citation, then notify the court that you are electing to attend driver improvement school. If the class is not completed timely, your school election is forfeited, points are assessed against your record and your license may be suspended unless you pay additional fees to the court.

Following completion of the course, you must provide required proof of course completion to the court. Be aware that it is your responsibility to meet the court-reporting requirements

Advanced Driver Improvement Course

Drivers must complete an Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI) course if:

  • their driver license was suspended for accumulation of points,
  • they are a habitual traffic offender, or
  • they have been ordered by the court.

Additionally, Florida also has a “three crashes within three years” rule that requires drivers who have been convicted of a crash-related third traffic offense within 36 months to complete an approved driver improvement course that must include behind-the-wheel training and an assessment of driving ability.
